Integrated Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the Mithi River

Project Background

This study, led by Dr Nisha Pandey in collaboration with Parth Sarthy, focused on the environmental and social vulnerabilities along the Mithi River in Mumbai. The project assessed urban flooding, ecological degradation and community risks in one of the city’s most sensitive river corridors.

Objective

To analyse pollution, encroachment, informal settlement risks and flood vulnerability, and provide policy ready recommendations for sustainable river governance and climate resilient urban planning.

Approach

The study used field surveys, stakeholder consultations and urban risk mapping to evaluate water quality, waste discharge, ecological loss and the socio economic impacts on riverside communities.
