Project Background
This study for Ahmedabad City examined how stakeholder engagement shapes social, economic and environmental outcomes during large scale urban redevelopment and infrastructure projects.
Objective
To identify vulnerabilities related to livelihood loss, displacement, housing insecurity, health burdens and gendered risks arising from urban transformation.
Approach
Consultations were held with transport unions, women’s cooperatives, sanitation workers, traffic authorities, housing trusts and community groups. Established vulnerability frameworks were applied to map risks and governance gaps.
Key Insights
- Livelihood disruption, displacement and housing insecurity emerged as major risks.
- Women and informal workers face disproportionate impact during redevelopment.
- Cash compensation alone is insufficient; structural rehabilitation is required.
Policy Learning
The study demonstrates that early, inclusive stakeholder engagement reduces conflict, improves project design and strengthens governance outcomes. Participatory planning is essential for resilient and socially just urban development.
